Wheelchair services
Sandwell Wheelchair Service assesses for, provides and maintains wheelchairs, along with specialist seating or pressure cushions to people of all ages, with a registered Sandwell GP who require a wheelchair for their indoor mobility. Referral needs to be made by a Sandwell GP or healthcare professional.
Team
Team
We have a dedicated team consisting of a clinical team leader, occupational therapists and a rehabilitation engineer. They provide expert clinical assessment for a range of manual and powered wheelchairs, postural, pressure and functional needs. They are supported by a technical instructor and an administrative support team.
Services
Services
The service functions Monday – Friday, 8.30am – 5pm and assesses and supports people with their indoor mobility. We see patients in their own homes, at school or their workplace.
We provide a short-term loan service of up to three months for people who are terminally ill. The service is also available to people who have a short-term problem with their mobility, for example a broken leg (subject to availability).
We also provide accessories to help support people’s posture while sitting in their wheelchair, such as specialist back rests and seating systems.
The clinical team will also refer on to the West Midlands Regional Rehabilitation Centre for specialist assessment in the case of managing complex health conditions and for provision of complex seating and wheelchair solutions.
We do not provide motorised scooters as part of our service.
If you require a wheelchair for outdoor use only, for example to take a family member or friend out shopping or to a social event, you can contact Sandwell Shopmobility Service on 0121 553 1943. They are open Tuesday to Saturday from 8.30am to 2.30pm.
