The Trust’s Trauma and Orthopaedic (T&O) department treats patients with injuries to their bones and joints (hip and knee, foot and ankle, shoulder and elbow and hand issues). This also includes ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves (also known as soft tissue injuries). Services to treat spine problems (except trauma) like neck and back pain are not available.
Patients can be referred into the service in a number of ways.
This could be:
- Via our accident and emergency department (A&E)
- An Outpatient clinic via primary care
- The NHS e-referral service.
Patients may undergo treatment in the outpatient or day surgery or as an inpatient.
We hold outpatient clinics at City Hospital, Sandwell Hospital and the Lyng Centre. We also hold virtual clinics which are done over a telephone call.

Surgical Services
We undertake a wide variety of surgical treatments both as a day case and inpatient at both City and Sandwell Hospitals.
These include joint replacement (hip, knee, shoulder and elbow), keyhole surgery (shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee and ankle) and treatment of fractures of the bones.
These surgeries take place at the Birmingham Treatment Centre, which is based at City Hospital (day case surgery) and at Sandwell Hospital (day case and inpatient surgery).
Some of the operations we carry out are listed below:
- Shoulder – keyhole surgery for tendon injuries/recurrent dislocations/ impingment, replacement.
- Elbow, wrist and hand – acute and chronic tendon injuries, contractures release, carpal tunnel, instabilities, elbow replacement
- Hip – joint replacement, injections, avascular necrosis,
- Knee – joint replacement, ligament, meniscus and other soft tissue injuries, deformity correction
- Foot and ankle – bunions, deformity correction, surgery for arthritis, injections
Hand and Arm Injuries – Patch & Plan Service
Some patients with upper limb injuries that require surgery can be discharged home safely and brought back for day case surgery.
To be suitable for day surgery you need to be reasonably fit for your age and have an adult who can collect you from the hospital. You will need an adult at home with you overnight.
