Young Parents Maternity Service
The award-winning Young Parents Maternity Service (YPMS) consists of three midwives and a Maternity Support worker and looks after parents aged 19 and under. The midwives work across site offering one-to-one antenatal care to women throughout their pregnancy who live in Sandwell and West Birmingham.
The team offers friendly and open support, helping young parents feel confident in their new roles as mums and dads and learn the things they need to know to maximise their chances of a positive start to parenthood. The team feels privileged to have the opportunity to help make a difference to young people using our service. It is extremely rewarding to empower young parents to make decisions about their health and lifestyle choices.
The YPMS offers every young parent in Sandwell and West Birmingham and their family, care from the same midwife throughout their pregnancy journey and additional postnatal support – making sure they have a smooth and confident transition into parenthood. Mothers are also offered a choice of two antenatal clinics, at City Hospital and Sandwell Hospital and also deliver care at home.
The team doesn’t work in isolation. They take a multidisciplinary approach and work alongside community midwives and other colleagues from various other agencies such as the Best Start nurses and Young Parents Children’s Centre, working together to ensure that all the families under our care have the best support.
If you are under 18 you will be contacted by a member of the team and an appointment will be given to you to see a named midwife from the YPMS.
Over 18s will see their community midwife as usual, but an appointment can be made for additional support with a maternity support worker.
Advice can be given on parenting skills, emotional support, help with claiming benefits and also signposting to other agencies that can help.
