Trust launches community photo competition with 900 days to go until new super-hospital opens

1st May 2016

The new Midland Met Hospital opens on Grove Lane in Smethwick in just 900 days and to mark this milestone on Sunday 1st May Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust is inviting members of the public to enter their best photographs of the local community and historic health care buildings in a two year competition.

The Trust sites of City Hospital and Sandwell Hospital have long histories and mean a lot to the people who have been cared for in them over the years. The City hospital site in particular will be significantly changed as the move of some services to the Midland Met takes shape. The Trust wants to use the preceding 900 days to capture images from across the community. These could reflect the diverse people who live and work here, the historic buildings within the area where healthcare is provided, as well as the staff who make a huge contribution to the wellbeing of us all.

The best photographs will be part of public exhibitions leading up to the opening and will be on permanent display within the new hospital, as well as within a published book.

Every month until the opening, a panel of judges, led by Professor Jonathan Berg, well-known exhibiting photographer and author of photo book “Positively Birmingham”, will decide on the best entries that will then go through to the next stage of the competition.

Professor Berg, who is Director of Pathology at the Trust, said: “There is so much to capture as we move from our old hospital sites, especially the historic buildings at Dudley Road. I really look forward to people taking interesting and quirky photos of the buildings that have served us so well over the last 100 years or so.”

Entries can be made via the Trust website on https://www.swbh.nhs.uk/capturingthecommunity/
