Professor is “world’s number one” expert in atrial fibrillation

5th Feb 2014

A Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals Trust cardiologist has been named the world leader in his field.

Professor Gregory Lip is ranked as the world’s number one expert, by medical expert website, Expertscape, for his work into atrial fibrillation which is the commonest abnormality of the heart rhythm.

The presence of atrial fibrillation leads to an increased risk of stroke and heart failure, with a high mortality and disability.  Professor Lip’s work has led to important changes in the way the condition is managed and changes in guidelines nationally and internationally.

Prof Lip’s two colleagues, Dr Deirdre Lane was also named on the list in 11th place, and Prof Paulus Kirchhof was listed in 15th place. City Hospital was given the accolade of being one of the top institutions in the world, for research into atrial fibrillation.

Professor Lip said: “I am delighted and humbled by this honour. It’s very nice to feel appreciated and recognised. This accolade is very much a reflection of the many research collaborations, and the strong support of colleagues and management of SWBH Trust, that have led to us having achieved such world-ranking success. Long may it may it continue into the future.”

The global expert list was compiled by Expertscape by objectively going through published research work in order to recognise the world leaders in their field.
