No pain just gains for City Hospital staff as refurbished gym opens

11th Jan 2020

The New Year brings new resolutions, and for many of us who have perhaps over-indulged a little (or a lot) those resolutions may well include getting yourself in shape. Thankfully for staff working at a West Midlands healthcare Trust there’s a new way to feel the burn – and it’s free.

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust has recently revealed a newly furbished gym for staff at its City Hospital site. The gym, located behind the hospital’s emergency department, has been revamped with several new additions to the equipment and is now looked after by CCTV and other security features. The new look gym at City hospital, increases the access to exercise facilities already available to staff, with a dedicated gym at Sandwell Hospital already in use, will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is free for any member of staff at the Trust to use and enjoy as soon as they have completed a gym induction.

Jenny Wright, Health and Wellbeing Manager: “There’s lots of newly added safety features for the benefit of gym-goers. We’ve now got large and warm changing rooms, shower and locker facilities, we’ve got new weights and large screen televisions which have been added to the gym. We’re looking into setting up a new programme of classes, likely beginning with circuit training and ‘legs, bums and tums’ and we might get a bit more adventurous when those are set up.”

Head of Engagement and Retention Amir Ali : “The opening of the City gym is a fantastic benefit for staff, which brings it in line with the gym we have at Sandwell . I think it’s a great opportunity for staff at the City staff to enjoy themselves and get fit too. With it open 24-7 it’s particularly beneficial to those members of staff working flexible shifts, and is among the benefits we’re currently promoting to potential recruits.”
