Cardiologist scoops academic honour

7th Nov 2013

An Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals Trust professor has been given a Visiting Professorship at the University of Belgrade in Serbia for his research into atrial fibrillation.

Professor Gregory Lip has been given the honour for his continuing research into atrial fibrillation as a global and common condition, after being part of the Belgrade Atrial Fibrillation Project, in collaboration with the University of Belgrade’s Assistant Professor of Cardiology, Professor Tatjana Potpara.

One particular focus has been the study of ‘low risk’ patients with lone atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation is where the heart has an irregular rhythm due to it contracting in an inconsistent pattern.

This common rhythm problem usually confers a high risk of stroke.

Professor Lip said: “I have been very much involved with atrial fibrillation research and collaborated with Professor Potpara, an enthusiastic academic from University of Belgrade, who had a similar interest in following these patients.

“We have published a number of research papers together.

“Serbia has good access to clinical research, and one of the major strengths of this Trust is the quality of our clinical research.”

Professor Lip delivered his inaugural lecture and received his diploma on 17t October from the Vice Dean, Prof Tatjana Simić.

He also sits on the International Advisory Board of the Serbian Atrial Fibrillation Association and with Professor Potpara, has published some high quality research papers which have had an impact on guidelines.

Professor Lip commented: “It’s very nice to be recognised and appreciated. It’s been superb to get involved in setting up research with helpful and collaborative colleagues.”
