Clinicians from emergency medicine, anaesthetics and critical care took part in a pioneering workshop funded by the Trust’s charity, as more than 40 doctors and clinicians from across Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust came together at Midland Met University Hospital to take part in a unique emergency airway management training workshop.
Led by internationally recognised airway expert Dr Rich Levitan, the advanced airway workshop provided clinical teams with hands-on training using custom-made advanced airway models and 3D simulation equipment, helping clinicians develop and refine life-saving skills used in some of the most challenging emergency situations. The event was organised by Dr Hema Patel, who highlighted the importance of ensuring staff have access to the highest quality training opportunities. Dr Patel said: “Patients experiencing a critical airway emergency require immediate, highly skilled intervention. Providing our teams with access to world-class expertise and realistic simulation training helps ensure we are continually developing our skills and preparedness for these rare but high-risk situations. It was fantastic to bring together colleagues from across specialties to learn, share experiences and strengthen our teamwork for the benefit of patients.”
The workshop was delivered by Dr Rich Levitan, internationally known for his work in airway management and emergency medicine education. Over four hours, participants took part in practical demonstrations, simulation exercises and collaborative learning designed to strengthen both individual technical skills and multidisciplinary working. Among those attending was Dr Bish Elangbam, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, who praised the quality of the training. He commented: “This was an exceptional learning experience. The opportunity to train with Dr Levitan and use innovative simulation models provided valuable insights into managing some of the most complex airway emergencies we may encounter. The emphasis on teamwork and shared learning across specialties was particularly powerful.”
Group Chief Medical Officer Dr Mark Anderson said the workshop reflected the Trust’s commitment to professional development and high-quality patient care. He explained: “Training like this goes beyond a normal medical teaching environment, and ultimately it is our community who will benefit from the skills learned from a world-leading clinician. We were delighted to welcome Dr Rich Levitan to Midland Met and provide our clinical colleagues with this outstanding professional development opportunity. Investing time in advanced training helps ensure our teams are equipped with the latest knowledge, techniques and confidence to deliver the very best care for patients when it matters most.”
The event also served as a celebration of the collaborative approach taken by resuscitation teams across Midland Met University Hospital, recognising the importance of continually learning together and sharing knowledge across disciplines. The Trust expressed its thanks to Dr Rich Levitan, Dr Jonathan St George, the Resus Learning Academy and Dr Rob Orman for their support and contribution to the success of the workshop.
Funding for the faculty-led training was provided by Your City & Metropolitan Hospitals Charity, enabling the event to be offered as an enhanced educational opportunity for clinicians across the Trust.
