Residents planning to watch the upcoming solar eclipse are being urged to take precautions to protect their eyesight and enjoy the event safely. Looking directly at the sun without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage, even during an eclipse. Experts advise that anyone wishing to view the eclipse should use certified solar eclipse glasses that meet ISO12312-2 international safety standards. Ordinary sunglasses, no matter how dark, do not provide adequate protection.
People should also check eclipse glasses for any signs of damage, such as scratches, tears or punctures, before use. Eclipse glasses should be worn whenever any part of the sun remains visible. For those who do not have eclipse glasses, indirect viewing methods, such as a pinhole projector, offer a safe alternative.
Mr Soon Ch’ng Consultant eye surgeon and clinical lead at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre said: “A solar eclipse is a fascinating event, and many people will be keen to experience it. However, it is essential that people do not look directly at the sun without appropriate eye protection. Even a brief glance can cause serious and permanent damage to your sight.
“What makes eclipse-related eye injuries particularly concerning is that they are often painless, and the damage may not be immediately obvious. Some people only notice symptoms hours later, such as blurred vision, blind spots or distorted sight. Unfortunately, by that stage the damage has already occurred and may be irreversible.
“The long-term impact on a person’s vision can be uncertain and could affect their eye health for the rest of their life. Certified solar eclipse glasses are the safest way to view the eclipse, and if you don’t have access to them, we recommend using an indirect viewing method such as a pinhole projector. Taking a few simple precautions will help ensure everyone can enjoy the eclipse safely.”
