Resident doctors from across Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust were recognised for their outstanding contributions to patient care and teamwork at the Trust’s annual Resident Doctor Awards.
The awards, organised by Chief Registrar Dr Najiat Sarker and team, celebrated the innovation shown by doctors across a wide range of specialties.
Dr Najiat Sarker explained: “Recognition is incredibly important in today’s NHS. Our resident doctors work in challenging, fast-paced environments every day, showing dedication, compassion and professionalism while delivering high-quality care to patients. These awards provide an opportunity to celebrate their achievements, highlight the positive impact they have on patients and colleagues, and acknowledge the innovation and teamwork that help our services thrive. It is inspiring to see so many examples of excellence across the Trust, and I am proud to recognise the outstanding contributions of our resident doctors.”
With more than 30 nominations from colleagues, 6 awards were presented, with a further 8 individuals receiving Highly Commended recognition.
The event highlights some exceptional work taking place across the Trust and celebrates the impact resident doctors have on patients, fellow staff and clinical services.
Dr Mike Blaber, Trust Wellbeing Lead for resident doctors said: “This event is always a highlight of the year, since there is so much to celebrate about our resident doctors. We heard stories of clinical excellence, courageous leadership, compassionate care, creative innovation and dedicated teamwork. While we could only have a handful of winners, the event really showcased the abundance of talent and professionalism that exists within the resident doctor cohort. This all bodes very well for the future of healthcare in the region.”

Among the winners were:
- Kalyaani Persad – FY1 Doctor of the Year
- Taiwo Oguntona and Junaid Aslam – SHO Doctors of the Year
- Hannah Sharpe and Nilesh Jaipal – FY2 Resident Doctor of the Year
- Nanthesh Kiruparan – SpR Doctor of the Year
