The emergency department at the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital has been awarded Bronze Green ED Accreditation by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, recognising its commitment to delivering sustainable, high-quality healthcare while improving patient care and operational efficiency. This marks a significant milestone for the department, which began its Green ED journey in October 2024. Over the past 15 months, teams across the department have delivered a range of quality improvement projects, introduced innovative ways of working and embedded sustainable practices into everyday care.
The Green ED programme encourages emergency departments across the UK to reduce their environmental impact while driving improvements in patient outcomes, efficiency and value. MMUH’s achievement reflects the collective efforts of its multidisciplinary workforce, including doctors, nurses, administrative colleagues and support staff. Dr Satya Khare, Clinical Director for emergency medicine at MMUH, commented: “This accreditation is a fantastic achievement for our department and a reflection of the dedication, enthusiasm and teamwork shown by colleagues across every staff group. Sustainability is not separate from delivering excellent healthcare, it is integral to it.
“Over the past 15 months, our teams have embraced opportunities to reduce waste, improve efficiency and enhance patient experience, while maintaining our focus on providing safe, high-quality care. The success of our Green ED work demonstrates how environmental responsibility, and clinical excellence can go hand in hand. I am incredibly proud of what has been achieved. Our projects have already been shared regionally and nationally, and we are delighted that some of our work has now been selected for presentation at the European Society for Emergency Medicine Congress (EUSEM) in Paris. This recognition puts MMUH on the map as a leader in sustainable emergency care.”
The award supports the NHS ambition to deliver more sustainable healthcare and acknowledges initiatives that reduce waste, generate efficiencies and create financial savings while benefiting patients and staff.
Diane Wake, Group Chief Executive of Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, said: “This is well-deserved accreditation. It is a significant accomplishment which highlights the innovation, commitment and professionalism of our emergency department teams.
“As an organisation, we are committed to delivering sustainable healthcare and reducing our environmental impact wherever possible. This award shows how our colleagues are leading the way by finding practical solutions that support patients, improve services and contribute to the NHS’s wider sustainability ambitions. Now, we look forward to supporting the team as they continue their journey towards silver accreditation.”
The department is preparing to pursue Silver Green ED Accreditation next year. Currently, only one emergency department in the Midlands has achieved silver status, and MMUH hopes to become the second.
