An Ophthalmology clinic held at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre has tackled waiting lists by seeing almost 100 glaucoma patients in one day.
The eye centre, run by Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, carried out the high volume “Super Saturday” clinic in November, an initiative within the NHS to bring waiting lists down.
Ninety patients with glaucoma were seen for a routine check-up in just six hours. The appointments involved an eye test, followed by an examination performed by ophthalmology staff to check eye pressure and for the warning signs of glaucoma damage.
The clinic was led by Imran Masood, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, and supported by Ahoane Qureshi, Ophthalmologist registrar, and glaucoma fellows Dalia Abdelrahman and Garvit Bhutani.
Imran Masood said: “Super Saturday clinics are a fantastic way to deliver care to a large number of our patients who need regular management of their glaucoma.
“By seeing so many patients, we can reduce our waiting lists and ensure that patients are being monitored and treatment plans to prevent vision loss are in place.
“I would like to thank my team who have delivered this vital care for some of our most vulnerable patients.”
The Super Saturday clinic is part of several initiatives from the Trust to bring waiting lists down.
The department is planning future weekend clinics and other planned developments such as upgrades to ophthalmic image management to further improve the Ophthalmology service.
