Guidance issued by NHS England and the Care Quality Commission states that every hospital must publish planned and actual staffing levels on their wards.
This forms part of the government’s response to the Francis report which calls for more transparency within the NHS around safe staffing, ensuring patients and the know that we have the right number of staff in place to provide safe and high-quality care at all times.
Monthly staffing reports are also reported to board meetings which will be made available to the public online.
How we check our staffing
Every month we look closely at the number of staff working on our wards compared to what we planned. We publish this information in our Safer Staffing Reports, which show:
- How many staff were on duty
- Where we met our planned levels
- Where we faced challenges, and what we are doing to improve
