Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre – training

Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) Surgical Skills Facility is funded to assist ophthalmic trainees locally and nationally to acquire surgical skills in the field.

The facility features four microscopes and two cameras feeding to a LCD TV screen, to facilitate teaching. There is also a surgical skills board available for suturing training.

National courses run throughout the year. Trainees from West Midlands Deanery also use the facility to help with their surgical requirements. Currently, the School of Ophthalmology runs one session of phaco training in any calendar month.

At present, we have one session per month to be supervised by a consultant and one to be supervised by a senior trainee. Each session will run from 9am to 12.30pm.

For further information on simulation training courses, please contact BMEC to get your name on one of these sessions.

Sessions could be booked for glaucoma procedures, suturing practices, etc. There will be a nominal fee towards the costs of maintaining and buying equipment. This should be made against your study leave budget.

The facility can be rented for commercial or non-commercial courses.
