Respiratory Physiology
Operating from both City Hospital and Sandwell Hospital sites, we are a large respiratory physiology and sleep physiology service providing your doctor with a diagnosis of your condition. This will include lung function tests and home oxygen assessment and reviews (HOSAR).
We also carry out sleep studies to assess whether you will need Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) or Domiciliary Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) therapy.
Services
We carry out a number of tests on patients referred to the service. These will help your doctor to work out the best way to treat your condition.
These tests are listed below:
- Spirometry including Maximal flow volume curves
- Response to inhaled bronchodilators
- Static Lung Volumes by Whole Body Plethysmography or Nitrogen Washout
- Transfer Factor for Carbon Monoxide using the Single Breath Technique
- Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Testing
- Mannitol Challenge Testing
- Assessment of blood gas status via pulse oximetry
- Skin Prick Allergy Testing
- Arterialised Capillary and Arterial Blood Gases
- Field Exercise Studies
