’Twas the night before Christmas

24th Dec 2015

ALMOST SIXTY NHS STAFF working across Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust have marked the dedication of all NHS staff working over the Christmas and New Year bank holidays.

Inspired by the much loved verse that put all the excitement and anticipation of Christmas into one magical poem – ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ – the staff were joined by a few patients and hospital volunteers who recorded one line each in a video remembering the dedication and commitment of NHS workers whose Christmas and New Year would be spent at work, caring for the sick, rather than at home with their loved ones.

The poem makes reference to the huge cast of workers who keep the NHS running 24/7. The opening line is read by seven year old Molly McClelland, a patient in the children’s ward at Sandwell Hospital. All she wants for Christmas is to get back home to her own bed, and be well enough to enjoy the festivities with her family.

Recording his line Chief Executive Toby Lewis commented: “Being away from loved ones to work for the NHS over any holiday is a sacrifice. The poem recognises what staff and volunteers do and celebrates their contribution.”
