Students get a taste of Healthcare Sciences

Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs City, Sandwell and Rowley Regis hospitals, opened its doors to young aspiring scientists to give them a taster of what a career in healthcare science could entail.

Around 40 young people aged 14-17 years old from local schools embarked on the taster day, learning more about life sciences, physiology sciences and physical sciences and engineering.

Jilly Croasdale, Associate Director Healthcare Science, said: “I wanted to give students in our local schools the opportunity to find out more about all the different career options available to them in our hospital. With the taster day we hope to provide awareness of Science careers in a hospital setting”.

The day began with interactive stands from various departments across the healthcare sciences spectrum including: Pathology, Nuclear Medicine, Medical Physics, Neurophysiology, Radiopharmacy, Medical Engineering, Medical Illustration, Gastro-intestinal physiology and Cardiac physiology.

The afternoon provided the eager young scientists the opportunity to see the departments in action with tours set up in groups.
