We aim to reduce the environmental impact of travel associated with our activities, particularly through vehicle emissions, fuel consumption and our impact on local congestion through a sustainability action plan we have established, as well as our Carbon Management Plan.
We run a cycle scheme for staff and we operate a shuttle bus service for staff needing to travel between the City Hospital and Sandwell Hospital sites.
We are committed to encouraging staff to lead a healthy lifestyle and we have set up a cycling group dedicated to making it easier for staff to ride their bike to work.
The group was established following a staff Listening into Action event, which revealed that employees would value the opportunity to cycle to work. Made up of staff from across the Trust, including representatives of Finance, HR, Estates and Facilities, the group works towards making cycling to work as easy as possible.
The group has secured funding for cycle storage at all three hospital sites, and a cycle to work scheme is rolled out several times a year.
Bike hire/purchase schemes
The Trust works with Bikes for the NHS to provide a cycle to work scheme for staff. This is a government initiative under the Government’s Green Travel Plan, introduced to encourage people to ride a bike to work and reduce pollution. Under the scheme, an employee will be given the use of a new bicycle in return for a deduction in salary over a 12-month period. The scheme is open to all employees several times a year and the value of the bike and accessories obtained under the scheme can be up to a maximum of £1,000.
Cycling is encouraged at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. We have invested in several cycle shelters and cycle pod storage in key areas around City and Sandwell hospitals and there is a cycle shelter at Rowley Regis Hospital.
We also offer a popular cycle to work scheme for all staff, which runs several times a year.
