Ready To Go Wards

Our Ready To Go Wards – also known as Medically Fit for Discharge wards – serve from D43 at City Hospital (Sheldon Block, Ground Floor), and the McCarthy and Eliza Tinsley Wards at Rowley Regis Hospital.

We take patients who are deemed medically stable to be discharged and we focus entirely on expediting your discharge with you and your families help.

You are our priority and as such you have our full attention, we are here so that you are completely involved in your discharge and you are top of our list in all we do.

What to expect

IMG_4163We have experts in discharges and the sometimes complicated process that comes with it! We have Discharge Liaison Nurses, Community case managers, social workers and an occupational therapist.

Nursing staffs that are acutely trained to recognise if you become unwell again.

D43 Ward can be found on the ground floor of the Sheldon Block at City Hospital. It contains 27 beds in single-sex bays, and there are also three side rooms (one with ensuite). The ward’s contact numbers are 0121 507 5779/5530.

D43 ward is for people (primarily patients from the Birmingham area) who are medically and therapy fit to be discharged, but there may be a delay in going home. This could be because you are waiting for social services, care packages, or for some changes to be made to your home or living arrangements, to name a few examples. The unit is nurse-led and there are GP visits three times a week, but there is also access to the out of hours service – speak to a member of the team for more information.

We encourage service users to wear their own clothes and to make use of the dining and lounge areas. Family participation is greatly encouraged, and we have an open visiting culture (between 11am-9pm).

The team on D43 is:

  • Jane Burton – Ward Manager
  • Kelly Holmes, Marie Bostock, Janet Fabella – Senior Sisters
  • Team of qualified nurses, HCAs, and housekeeping
