PATIENTS and their families came together on Saturday to show off their increased mobility due to hip replacements done at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals Trust.
Walking two miles for the Trust’s own charity in Canon Hill Park, the group of approximately fifty people were there to raise awareness of the research that the hip replacement surgery team have done to improve their patients’ experience.
Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant Mr Manoj Sikand who organised the event, said: “The event went very well and was supported by patients and staff who all came and braved the elements walking approximately two miles.
“At SWBH, we are constantly striving to find ways and means to improve patient care and make the journey through hospital as pleasant as possible, whilst at the same time improving surgical techniques, by taking part in research.”
Vera Lewin (58), who had her right hip operated on by Mr Sikand two years ago, said: “I am very happy to join this charity talk today to show my support. After having the surgery two years ago, my new hip has helped me to live independently at home, including the ability to go and do my own shopping.”
Lynda Burgoyne, from Great Barr, had her hip replacement carried out by Mr Sikand 18 months ago and has been much better since surgery. She said: “I have recommended the hospital and Mr Sikand to my friends and family, as three friends of mine had their hips done at other hospitals and by far mine has been the best outcome. Before the hip operation, I was restricted walking, getting up and down stairs or sleeping. Since then everything is great, I can do anything now.”
