Paperboy’s first wage packet goes to thank hospital

A Bearwood paperboy, said thanks to Sandwell Hospital recently for the care they gave his little brother five years ago, by handing over his first wage packet.

Thirteen year old Amit Sohanpal was encouraged by his charity-minded parents, Madhu and Bal to think about donating some of his first wages after he started a paper round. Straight away Amit said he wanted the £10 donation to go to Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital’s (SWBH) Neonatal Unit to thank them for caring for his little brother.

Five year old Arjun was born three months early in 2008 and at just 2lb 15oz  was transferred to the neonatal unit, then at Sandwell hospital, where he received months of care to get him home safely.

Mum Madhu, said she remembers Amit holding Arjun for the first time and how protective of his little brother he has been ever since. “Amit was only eight at the time and as Arjun progressed he was eventually able to hold him and they bonded instantly.”

Arjun, now a chatty and lively five year old, attends Abbey Infant’s School and is keen to follow in his big brother’s footsteps to Perryfields High School. Generous Amit said: “I just wanted to say thank you very much for taking care of my little brother, and this was one way to do it.”

Both of the boys’ parents work for National Express and dad Bal is an inspector at West Bromwich. He said: “Obviously we are very proud of both the boys and were delighted when Amit said he wanted to send his donation to the hospital, we are very grateful for all that was done for Arjun.”  Mrs Sohanpal added: “The months that Arjun was in hospital are part of us that can never be shaken off.”

Reacting to the heat warming donation, Janine Hingley, Neonatal Ward Manager said: “When we heard the story of Amit’s generosity, we were absolutely thrilled.  We are so happy that he remembered the care we gave to his brother and are very grateful for the donation.”
