Overwhelmed by kindness to cancer patients

20th Apr 2016

CANCER patients who are cared for by Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust are in for a massive treat as the Trust has been inundated by kind hearted volunteers who want to help out at the Trust’s annual wellbeing event.

Due to be held in May at the Aston Villa Football Stadium, the event promises treats and treatments as well as advice and information to hundreds of cancer patients and their carers.

Since the call for volunteer therapists went out, the Trust received an overwhelming number of requests from local businesses and volunteers keen to get involved. After the appeal was published in the Birmingham Mail and the Trust website, over 40 calls were received that day from kind-hearted locals offering their services in everything from hairdressing to hypnotherapy. The post was also shared over 600 times on Facebook, reaching close to fifty thousand people.

Jenny Donovan, Cancer Services Manager at the Trust, said: “We were absolutely delighted and overwhelmed by the number of calls from volunteers keen to help out at our Cancer Wellbeing event. It demonstrates there is a rich seam of human kindness within our local community and these numbers exceeded all our expectations. The event will be held on Saturday 14th May from 10am to 3pm. We are very appreciative of everyone who has offered their services. Many thanks to all who got in touch and we are sorry that we couldn’t accommodate everyone, but we hope to see you next year!”
