Mr Samer Elsherbiny

Having qualified from Sheffield in 1993, Samer Elsherbiny trained in general surgery, general medicine, accident and emergency and neurology before starting his training in ophthalmology. Having trained in Glasgow and Leeds, he then joined the specialist registrar rotation in the West Midlands and in 2004 was appointed Consultant in the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, with a specialist interest in retinal diseases. Despite this specialist interest, he also continues to oversee a large volume of general adult ophthalmology and is responsible for approximately ten thousand patient episodes annually.

 

He has co-authored numerous publications and has many areas of interest within ophthalmic practice, the most prominent of which is workforce development and education and training. He was recently awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education from the University of Birmingham and is preparing for the Masters. After holding a number of administrative roles within BMEC, he has spent more time recently as examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and invited examiner overseas. He is now focusing on collaborative education and training programs in developing countries. His external duties include being ophthalmology advisor to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.
