ASU

The Adult Surgical Unit (ASU) is a mixed ward with 20 beds which is used for surgical outpatient procedures.

Outpatients are admitted to this ward for procedures carried out under both local and general anaesthetic.

Before going to theatre patients are admitted to the ward for their pre-op and after their surgery return to the ward to recover and receive post-operative care.

Patients would be expected to spend no more than 24 hours on this ward. Some patients

The length of a patient’s stay depends on the type of surgery they have undergone, and the rate at which each individual recovers.

Patients on ASU will be treated by a multidisciplinary team which includes surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre staff, doctors, nurses, health care assistants and surgical care practitioners.

Day-case patients should wear comfortable clothing.

Overnight patients should bring:

• Nightwear
• Dressing gown and slippers
• Toothbrush and toothpaste
• Soap and deodorant
• Towel and flannel

The ward is located on the 2nd floor of the Birmingham Treatment Centre at City Hospital
