  • Updated numbers of deaths of people testing positive for Covid-19 are published as soon as appropriate tests and discussions with families have taken place.
  • To minimise the resource required for frontline staff to complete the reporting process, NHS England and NHS Improvement have introduced a new reporting mechanism to allow staff to report a death involving Covid-19.
  • This switch to a new system required us to change from reporting deaths that occurred between 9am and 9am to reporting deaths that occurred between 5pm and 5pm.
  • NHS England and NHS Improvement only provide data for hospitals in England.
  • The length of time required to confirm publicly a death of somebody testing positive for Covid-19 can occur for a number of reasons, for example an individual is tested post-mortem or difficulties in tracing and informing family members.
  • A change in the method of reporting means that from yesterday (25 March) we amended the data collection from 9am – 9am to 5pm – 5pm. Therefore:
    • Yesterday’s published figures comprised the period from 9am 24th March to 5pm on 24th March.
    • Today’s published figures comprise the period from 5pm 24th March to 5pm 25thMarch.
    • Tomorrow’s published figures will comprise the period from 5pm 25th March to 5pm 26th March with all future death announcements comprising the 5pm-5pm period.

All further announcements – will cover a full 24 hour period from 5pm to 5pm
