Medicines

We ask patients to bring existing medicines in to hospital with them. This is so that we see what medicines they are currently taking and ensure they do not miss any doses. It also gives doctors a chance to review their medicines and see if any changes are necessary.

Any new medicines will be issued to patients on the ward during drugs rounds.

Our nurses wear red aprons when they are doing a drugs round. The aprons have ‘do not disturb’ written on them. This is so that the nurse can concentrate on calculating the correct dose without being interrupted to ensure that errors are not made.

Patients will usually be given a ten day supply of prescribed medicines to take home and a letter will be sent to their GP, so that further medicines can be prescribed if necessary.
