The Medical Admissions Unit at City Hospital is a 30 bedded unit responsible for admitting all medical patients to the hospital. It is adjacent to the Accident and Emergency. Patients are referred either directly from their General Practitioners or via the Accident and Emergency department. Patients are assessed and reviewed by a medical consultant within 24 hours of presenting to the MAU and prior to their admission to the main spine of the hospital.
The MAU has a three bedded monitored area that regularly caters for seriously ill patients. It is staffed by a team of dedicated nursing staff as well as two medical consultants Dr Lee and Dr Langford, and two acute medical specialist registrars. Additional team support is provided by attached healthcare professionals including ward pharmacist and technicians, who make regular rounds ensuring accurate medication histories, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists. In addition it has close links with the intermediate care services allowing rapid placement of patients requiring longer term rehabilitation and respite care.
The MAU has been involved in the multi-centre EXCAPE trial for Chest Pain assessment units, as well as audits into the efficiency of services. It has also developed its own thromboembolism service for the assessment and treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis and treatment of low risk patients with possible pulmonary embolism.
Procedures Specialised in:
Non-invasive ventilation. The MAU in conjunction with the out-reach service regularly initiates and maintains patients with Type II respiratory failure on NIV.

Daily cardiology review. Patients admitted with chest pain are rapidly assessed and reviewed by members of the cardiology department.
Links to primary care services such as Intermediate care, and the Respiratory Outreach team.
