•Anaesthetics>>
Anaesthetic services are provided at both City and Sandwell Hospitals, for elective and emergency surgical services. A totally comprehensive service is provided with 24/7 cover for Emergency Surgery, Obstetric and Critical Care. Elective surgery is provided in 24 operating theatres.
The department provides all Anaesthetic/Intensivist services to Critical Care and Pain Management services.
There are 39 Consultant Anaesthetists, 5 Associate Specialists, 7 Staff Grades and trainees from both the Birmingham and Stoke on Trent Schools of Anaesthesia.
There are weekly training sessions for Anaesthetic SHOs and the Trust is widely regarded as providing excellent placement for trainees.
The Department participates in training paramedics (ambulance personnel and ODP’s) and in training medical students as required.
The comprehensive range of anaesthetic expertise supports using General and Local anaesthesia, for all surgical activity provided within the Trust. This ranges from Paediatric services, Obstetric, Emergency Surgical, Ophthalmology and Day Case surgery at Sandwell and in the Birmingham Treatment Centre at City Hospital.
Anaesthetics are also administered for ECT, X-Ray, CT scans, Cardioversions and Endoscopies. An Anaesthetist supports the Emergency Response Teams at both hospitals. Anaesthetic Pre Admission clinics are held weekly.
The Department meets regularly for educational sessions, monthly audit and bi-monthly business meetings. The department is fully committed to clinical audit and there are regular meetings of the Divisional Governance Group.
