Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust score a hat-trick in national recognition

8th Jul 2016

TWO teams at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, the Community Care and the FINCH team, have both made it to the finals for the prestigious national Nursing Times Awards 2016.

The Community Matron Care Homes team has been shortlisted in two categories: Care of Older People and Managing Long-term Conditions. Ruth Williams, iCares Service Manager, said: “I am absolutely delighted for the team with this success. They have been working very hard with the West Midlands Ambulance Services and care homes in Sandwell to deliver training courses to care assistants. This initiative makes such a difference to the patients as they can now receive better care at home and do not have to visit hospitals as often. It is an honour to be nationally recognised and I believe this will encourage all of the team members to work harder and deliver better results to our patients.”

The FINCH team (Faecal Incontinence and Chronic Constipation Healthcare), a multiple-awarding service, has also been shortlisted in the category Continence Promotion and Care for their innovative approach in helping patients to manage bowel dysfunctions. Kelly Stackhouse, the Lead Nurse for the FINCH team, said:

“We are extremely honoured and proud to be shortlisted up against other care leaders for this award. This is such a meaningful reward for our staff who have developed such an innovative and simple model to help our patients get the right help by the right person at the right place. All our patients who have bowel problems can get help from us first before we direct them to specialists. This has been recognised as a national practice as it helps to speed up the treatment and enhance patient experience.

“We know that poo can be such a taboo subject, so we want to provide a service where it’s absolutely okay to come in and share experiences and suggestions with one another without any fear or judgment. We are overwhelmed to be recognized for the work that we are doing for our patients and this is such strong encouragement for our work.

“To win this award would mean the world to us and we are thrilled to meet the judges and present our work to them in the next couple of weeks.”
