Professor Philip Murray

Prof Murray is Professor of Ophthalmology, Centre for Translational Inflammation Research, University of Birmingham, and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist, Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. He trained in ophthalmology at Croydon. Southampton and Moorfields, and undertook basic science research at the Institute of Ophthalmology and Department of Ophthalmo-immunology, Netherlands Ophthalmic Research Institute.

His main research area concentrates on clinical and laboratory studies in intraocular inflammation, and focuses on inflammatory mechanisms in the ocular environment. Research is aimed at answering the following questions:

  • why does intraocular tolerance fail in uveitis?
  • what immune mechanisms initiate and drive the inflammatory response?
  • what can one do about it?

He is a member of various RCOphth, RCP, AoMRC committees, member of NIHR and HTA College of Experts, Honorary Secretary of the International Uveitis Study Group, section editor of a number of journals, adviser to 4 uveitis patient groups. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers, and authored 4 books. He is a Life Member of Brentford FC Supporters’ Club and plays baritone sax in Out of the Blue Jazz Orchestra and The Soul Providers.
