Professor Allister Vale was appointed Director of the National Poisons Information Service (Birmingham Unit) and the West Midlands Poisons Unit, City Hospital, Birmingham, in 1982. With other clinical toxicologists, he offers urgent outpatient assessment and subsequent elective admission for those requiring in-patient alcohol and drug withdrawal management as well as assessment of actual/potential adverse health effects from occupational, environmental and/or drug-related exposures. He was President of the European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists from 1992-1998, a Director of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT) from1991-1997 and President of the British Toxicology Society from 2004-2006.
He is currently President of the Clinical and Translational Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology. Professor Vale was awarded the President’s Medal of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 2006 for services to postgraduate medical education and received a Career Recognition Award from the AACT in 2008. He is Chairman of the MOD Research Ethics Committee and has published more than 500 papers on all aspects of poisoning.
