Speciality

Dr Nathani pursued his higher specialist training in the West Midlands having trained in all the major hospitals in Birmingham. During his training he developed an interest in breathing and ventilation which led into a research period of at least 2 years at the University of Birmingham.

He is the lead clinician at the City hospital, Birmingham for home ventilation.  This includes non-invasive ventilation (NIV) for patients with neuromuscular problems, Obesity and CPAP therapy in patients with sleep apnoea (OSA or OSAHS). He undertakes regular specialist clinics in NIV and sleep apnoea.

The NIV service provides specialist regional service for various causes of respiratory failure and presently treats about 200 patients with home NIV support.  Dr Nathani works closely with the neurology colleague at City Hospital and the regional centre of neurology at QE hospital in providing respiratory support to patients with neuromuscular weakness.

Dr Nathani also leads the Tuberculosis service at the City Hospital.  As a single centre, City Hospital treats among the highest numbers of active TB cases in Birmingham.  The centre has special expertise in treating patients with Multidrug resistant tuberculosis and routinely treats complex tuberculosis.  It deals with the highest number of inpatient TB admissions in West Midlands.
