Nadine Monk – Medical Secretary

Nadine Monk thumb 1DESPITE being only 27-years-old, Nadine Monk from West Bromwich, a medical secretary at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust (SWBH), has spent nearly a decade working for the NHS.

Nadine started her career at the Manor hospital after earning her Medical Secretary diploma and has been the sole secretary in Diabetes and Endocrinology at SWBH for the past seven years. She has been fundamental in helping the team improve its quality of care. She initiated the idea of setting up virtual consultations, which helped doctors to consult with patients by using Skype, Face Time or over the phone. This idea has helped the Diabetes team to win the award for Transformation at the Trust’s Annual Staff Awards 2014.

Currently her role is part-time, working three days per week; which is a demanding position.  However, despite the workload, Nadine finds the job rewarding when she receives positive feedback from patients and sees the diabetes team evolving day by day.

Reflecting on her journey, Nadine feels that a strong determination and dedication have helped her to get better at her work. This has resulted in her receiving the Chair’s Award in March 2010 for ‘going the extra mile’ in patient care. This strong determination also helped her to cope with various medical conditions since she had congenital heart defects at birth and to go through surgery to remove a brain tumour and radiotherapy at the age of 14.

Nadine has many plans to help the team. Now, she is aiming to bring more improvements to the virtual consultations and wishes to enrol on a managerial course in the near future.

Not only having a busy and rewarding job, Nadine has a very meaningful and active personal life. In her free time, Nadine takes part in voluntary work with the Jehovah’s Witness group. She feels that this work has a large impact on her work ethic and dedication to her job. She also enjoys playing netball to keep her active at all times.

Above all, Nadine feels that her success today would not exist without her husband’s support. Nadine said: “My husband is my true hero. He has given his full support to everything that I do.”
